Why spay or neuter your rabbit? A hysterectomy eliminates the possibility of uterine cancer, which is common in older female rabbits. The spay or neuter operation also reduces negative behavioral traits associated with hormones such as irritability, urine spraying, and aggressiveness.
In May 2023, Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue and Education Center (ESRREC) launched a pilot program to help our community get affordable spay or neuter for their pet rabbits. This service is ONLY being offered to rabbit owners on the eastern shore of Maryland and lower Delaware.
This program has two components:
- Transportation: An ESRREC volunteer will transport the client’s rabbit(s) to Animal Birth Control clinic in Millersville, MD. The nonrefundable fee for this transport is $30 per rabbit. The clinic will conduct the spay or neuter surgery for $225, to be paid directly to the clinic by the owner on the day of the surgery.
- Optional Financial Assistance: If financial help is requested to partially fund the surgery, ESRREC will review your request. ESRREC will cover any approved costs through its Spay/Neuter Assistance Fund. The financial assistance is only available for rabbits that are transported by ESRREC.
Please fill out the form below if you meet the geographical eligibility requirement. An ESRREC volunteer will follow up with eligible applicants regarding the details of the transport and how to pay for the transport fee. Our volunteer will transport four rabbits on each trip to the clinic, so we ask for your patience with scheduling.
If you are outside of our current service area, please do not fill out the form. click here to see if these low cost spay/neuter options are near you.
