Adoption Fee Increase
For the first time since we opened our doors in April 2015, the Board of Directors voted to increase our adoption fees per below.
Rabbits are wonderful pets who are worthy of respect. We strive to find good homes with adopters who understand the commitment and will love the rabbit as a family member. We don’t intend to cover costs with adoption fees; we do a lot of fundraising and apply for grants. We are all volunteers — no paid staff. All rabbits adopted from Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue are spayed/neutered, in good health, litter box trained, and socialized. We educate first time bunny adopters (habitat, proper diet, safe handling, etc.).
After our record-breaking year of 83 adoptions in 2020, as well as implementing a streamlined adoption process through Shelterluv, the Board felt we had grown enough to raise our fees to be comparable with other rabbit rescues in the region. The new fees will take effect on March 1, 2021. Thank you for your understanding and your continued support!

3rd Annual “Just Desserts” Fundraiser Gala Highlights
November 4, 2017 in Chestertown, MD
Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue Event Enjoyed by Class/Competition Participants and Spectators
On Saturday August 5, the Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue and Education Center (ESRREC) held a fundraiser called “Bunny Hop-a-Thon” at the Rock Hall American Legion that showcased the European spectator sport of rabbit jumping.
With a “beginner’s hopping class” in the morning provided by Pennsylvania-based Alikatt Rabbit Hopping and Agility, and hopping demonstrations and a competition in the afternoon, it was fun for both participants and spectators. ESRREC plans to hold another one in May 2018.
Big thank you to all the volunteers and the sponsors, who helped make the event a success!

Sweet Dreams Come True for ESRREC at “Just Desserts” Fundraiser
Thank you so much to all the enthusiastic supporters who came out on November 12 to our second annual Just Desserts fundraiser! We are happy to report that we raised over $1,700 in total, exceeding last year. We are very grateful to so many people for making this a success. In particular, Happy Chicken Bakery, who volunteered as caterers and provided several desserts (such as the wonderful mousse pictured here); Buntopia, who entertained everyone with their acoustic style of favorites; all the generous local businesses who contributed desserts or silent auction items or eastern shore wine (see list below); and last but not least all the incredible volunteers who helped with setup/cleanup, made lovely centerpieces, and staffed the various stations including the Bunny Bazaar, which raised nearly $350 by selling donated bunny-themed items. Again, THANK YOU!!
ESRREC Partners with Rita’s for a Sweet Fundraiser – July 14
We are pleased to announce that Rita’s of Chestertown (on Rt. 213, across from the Citgo gas station) will donate a portion of its sales during 6-9 pm on Thursday, July 14th. If you live in the Chestertown area, please spread the word with your friends and family, because the more customers at Rita’s that evening, the more ESRREC can benefit!
In addition we will have children’s activities, games, and prizes. You will also have the opportunity to purchase from ESRREC a special 10% discount card for $5 — that you can use at ANY Rita’s location until March 2017! These cards are only available through Rita’s fundraisers.
We hope to raise money and awareness for our adoptable bunnies. The funds raised will contribute to their care and medical needs until we can find good homes for them.
ESRREC Shelter to Hold Summer Open House on July 4th
The Independence Day Parade in Rock Hall is one of the most popular in the region. An old-fashioned small town parade, it starts at 10am and the crowd lines up along Main Street waving American flags to cheer it on. Afterwards there is a festival and concert at the Civic Center.
We welcome you to the shelter on Main Street to learn more about ESRREC, meet our adoptable bunnies, or perhaps buy something for the bunny lover in your life at our store Usagi’s Place! We will also gladly accept anything from our wish list — we are always in need of cleaning supplies, fresh veggies, or bunny toys.
ESRREC Shelter to Hold Winter Open House on December 5
On December 5 from 6-8pm, the ESRREC shelter on Main Street in Rock Hall will open its doors to the public for tours and refreshments (hot spiced cider, cookies, etc.). The Winter Open House is scheduled to coincide with Rock Hall’s WinterFest, also on Main Street. Go visit Santa and then hop on down the street to meet the bunnies!
On November 14 in Chestertown, MD approximately 25-30 people gathered to enjoy music by Buntopia and a smorgasbord of desserts donated by local restaurants at the ESRREC event “Just Desserts.” Between ticket sales, corporate donations, silent auction, merchandise, raffle, and wine sales, the event raised over $1,300 for the rabbit rescue. ESRREC extends its heartfelt thanks to all the hard-working volunteers, the restaurants and other donating businesses, the attendees, and the musicians for making this fundraiser a success. We have tentative plans to make it an annual event, so stay tuned next year!
ESRREC to Participate in Pet-A-Palooza in Centreville, MD
On Saturday, September 26, ESRREC will have a booth at Pet-A-Palooza at the Queen Anne’s County Library 10am-3pm and also conduct a Bunny Care Basics seminar at 2pm.
We need volunteers to help at the booth (fundraising and outreach). We can certify community service hours. If interested, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
ESRREC Wins Prizes During Rock Hall’s “Pirates & Wenches Weekend”
On August 9, Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue and Education Center (ESRREC)’s store Usagi’s Place was awarded Third Place in the Merchant category of the “La Casa Deck Out” decoration contest for Rock Hall Pirates & Wenches Fantasy Weekend. The town-wide pirate-themed festival, just finishing up its 8th year, is a popular eastern shore event that brings thousands of visitors by boat and by land. It has become a premier tourist attraction for the small town. Usagi’s Place was open extra hours and was able to raise nearly $270 in donations and sales.
In addition, Caroline (who was born to a stray rabbit in a backyard in Kennedyville, MD) won second place in the Pets Costume Contest. She had stiff competition from 6 costumed dogs but managed to prevail in her cute wench outfit. ESRREC President Cora Dickson noted that she was very well behaved and served as the perfect bunny ambassador for the rabbit rescue in front of the huge crowd. Caroline and her brothers (John, Edward, and Robert) are currently at least 5 months old. They are tentatively scheduled to be spayed/neutered in early September and they will be adoptable 10 days after their operations.

Alliance with the House Rabbit Society
March 25, 2015
We are proud to announce that we were accepted by the House Rabbit Society as an official Ally. We look forward to partnering with them!
Two important developments in the last month for ESRREC: We resolved our zoning issue, and the IRS approved our 501(c)(3) status! We ordered special rabbit cages and are anxiously awaiting their arrival so that we can open our shelter in time for Easter.
We will open the Usagi’s Place store the weekend of May 9-10, 2015. Our hours will be Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm. All proceeds will go to help the rescue.
